Two households move here with the same budget. One settles comfortably. The other spends the second year quietly worried. The difference is rarely what either of them paid for the house.

It is what they left out of the spreadsheet. The fear of not being able to afford it once you are here is really a fear of running short somewhere you cannot easily leave, and it is usually caused by a modelling mistake rather than by the place being expensive.

A thirteen year old will tell you they are not coming. A sixteen year old will tell you it is fine and then not speak for a month. Both of them are saying the same thing, and it is not about Vancouver Island.

It is about the friend group. That is the objection underneath almost every version of this, and understanding it changes what you do about it, because a fear of losing people is not answered by describing beaches.

The trip most people book is three nights over a weekend, based at whichever hotel had a room, in whichever town the flight or ferry lands nearest. It is the wrong shape, and it usually produces a decision made on a Sunday afternoon in a car.

Where you sleep on a house-hunting trip matters more than it does on a holiday, because the evenings are the experiment. Daytime tells you about houses. Evenings tell you whether you could live there.

Most people ask this question as though the answer depends on the market. It does not. It depends on what you are uncertain about.

If you already know which street you want and the only open question is which house, renting first mostly costs you a year and two removal vans. If you are uncertain about the region, the town, or whether the whole idea holds up in February, renting is the least costly way to be wrong.

If you already own or rent here seasonally, you know what the winter is like in the abstract. What you have not experienced is the version where you do not leave, and the difference between those two is bigger than the weather.

The weather is the smallest part of it. What actually changes is the town, the property, and the shape of your week once the reason to pack up in October is gone.

There is one route to a family doctor in British Columbia, and it is the Health Connect Registry. You register, an attachment coordinator contacts you when a provider in your area has capacity, and you cannot search for a doctor yourself through it.

What nobody will tell you is how long that takes, and that is not evasion. The province runs the registry, prioritises by medical need, and states plainly that it cannot estimate a wait.

Two houses on the same rural road can have completely different internet, and the coverage map will show both as served. That is not a flaw in how you are reading the map. It is how the map is built.

The federal government aggregates coverage to road segments of roughly 250 metres, and its own documentation states that not every household inside a mapped area necessarily has access to the service shown.

There is no central childcare waitlist in British Columbia. Every waitlist is held by the individual centre, and a family joins each one separately, which means the work of finding care is a series of phone calls rather than a single application.

That one structural fact decides everything else about how you approach a move with young children, and almost nothing published about childcare here says it plainly.

Nanaimo is the only city in Canada with a dessert named after it, and it has built a self-guided trail of more than forty stops around that fact. Traditional bars, gluten-free versions, a milkshake, a gelato, a macaron, and one made with spent brewery grain in place of the coconut.

There is also a Nanaimo bar pedicure, which tells you how far the city is willing to take this.

The coffee here is better than a city of this size ought to manage, and almost none of it is on the highway. The good cafes sit downtown, in the Old City Quarter, and in a few pockets you would only find by living here.

That matters more than it sounds. Cafes are a decent proxy for whether a neighbourhood has any street life, and in Nanaimo the map of good coffee is more or less the map of walkable pockets.
