The reason people golf here rather than somewhere else is the calendar. The season on this coast runs long past where it ends in Alberta or the interior, and in a mild year there are very few weeks you cannot play.

Within the city there are a handful of courses covering the full range, from a championship layout above Departure Bay to a nine-hole you can walk after work. A short drive extends that considerably.

Nanaimo is one of the better riding towns on Vancouver Island, and plenty of people who have driven straight through it on the way to Cumberland or Squamish have no idea. Doumont alone carries over a hundred trails, from beginner flow to double black.

The other half of it is the season. Riding here runs year round in practice, because the ground does not freeze and the forest canopy keeps a good share of the trails rideable through the wet months.

Nobody moves here for the winter. They move here to stop having the winter they had somewhere else, which is a different thing, and it is worth being clear about what you are getting instead.

What you get is a season that is grey, green, wet, and mild. Nothing freezes for long, the garden keeps going, and you can walk outside every day of it. What you give up is the crisp blue cold, the reliable snow, and the sun on white ground that people from the prairies miss.

Nanaimo faces east, across the Strait of Georgia toward the mainland mountains. That one fact decides almost everything about views here: which streets get water, what you see from them, and why the light does what it does.

It also means the classic sunset picture is not what people expect. The sun goes down behind the mountain at your back, not over the water in front of you, and what you get instead is the far range lighting up while you are looking at it.

Nanaimo has a harbour with two islands sitting across the mouth of it, which is the single most useful fact about boating here. Those islands take the weather, so the water between them and the city stays workable on days when the open strait is not.

That shelter is why the harbour has the traffic it does, and why people paddle here who would not launch a kayak on a more exposed coast.

The thing about trails in Nanaimo is that you do not drive to them. The network runs through the city rather than around it, so most neighbourhoods have a trailhead within walking distance and the serious hikes start at the edge of town.

That changes how often people actually use them. A forest walk that takes ten minutes to reach becomes a habit in a way that an hour's drive never does.

The ocean gets the attention here, but the lakes are what most people actually swim in. There are five worth knowing within the city or a short drive of it, and the freshwater warms up weeks ahead of the sea.

What surprises people arriving from a larger city is how close they are. Westwood Lake sits at the base of Mount Benson with a beach and a loop trail, and it is a ten minute drive from most of the city.

Nanaimo has two seasons that matter and ten months of transition between them. The wet season runs from late autumn into early spring, grey and mild rather than cold. The dry season runs through the summer and holds far longer than most people expect, often well into October.

What catches people out is not the rain. It is that the rain is spread thin across many grey days rather than arriving in downpours, and that the sun comes back for a stretch of the year so reliably that the whole town plans around it.

Nanaimo has more shoreline than most people expect, and the beaches are not interchangeable. One is a long sandy bay with a roped swimming area and a playground. Another is a rocky headland where you go for the walk, not the sand. Picking the right one comes down to what you actually want out of the afternoon.

Below is the local sorting, by what you are going for rather than by which is prettiest. Most of these sit inside the city, and the ones that do not are a short drive.

Sales slow down after Labour Day. That part is true, and it is the reason so many people decide to wait. What gets missed is that the number of homes competing with yours falls faster than the number of sales does, so the odds facing a well-priced home in October are not much different from the odds in August.

Last year on Vancouver Island, sales dropped by about a fifth between July and September, while active listings dropped by nearly a third between September and December. The market did not empty out. It got smaller on both sides at once, and it stayed in balanced territory right through October.
